Bali Summit Reflection

December 17, 2007 · Leave a Comment

smog- HongĀ KongThere seems to be little left to say after the Bali summit. My government behaved irrationally and unconsideratly. The very fact that a government could say that economic prosperity is more important than the environment shows how incredibly self-centred we are. We are okay with taking a year off our children or their children.
I am always amazed at how much the government can get away with without a massive uprising. It’s like they’re holding their breathe with every move hoping that no one will notice; and we don’t.
I know that I am one of the few who even cares what the political news is, and it’s not what everyone has a passion for, but I think we can all be interested in the lives of future generations. This is probably the main reason why the global warming topic is so important, because it is a universal. Everyone will be effected, no matter how much money one has. Most governments have realized this but it takes a lot longer for the country with the most power to be humble enough to talk on an equal level with all countries.
But it also brings about the question, what am I doing on a personal level. How am I not only help prevent further environmental damage, but how am I working out new ways of living. The answer in its simpliest form is nothing. I am writing a blog about it in a propane heated room drinking nut brown ale, with a light on. I put on a coat instead of turning up the heat, but is that just me trying to save money? I think it is, atleast more than trying to save the environment.
Is one more drive in the car going to hurt, is turning up the heat really going to hurt the environment?
I think it’s something to think about, as much as I want the answer to be yes, it’s not that simple to break out of a culture into a sustainable way of life.
